June 6, 1933 – February 19, 2020
The Emmaus family is mourning the loss of our beloved chancellor and former president, Dr. Daniel Harold Smith. Dr. Smith went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 19, 2020.
Dr. Smith was born in Saint Louis County, Missouri to Christian parents, Harold and Helen Smith, on June 6, 1933. Following his high school graduation, Dan joined the Marine Corps and served from 1950-1953. Dr. Smith was a graduate of Greenville College (IL), Midwest Bible Seminary (MO), University of Missouri (MO), and Loyola University (IL) where he received a doctorate in education. In 1959, Dan began his service at Emmaus Bible School (now College), where he served faithfully for more than 60 years.
Daniel Smith was a beloved teacher at Emmaus. He taught courses in Christian education, psychology, Christian counseling, and Bible. His students remember his warmth, his wisdom, and his knowledge of and genuine love for the Word of God. Dan and his wife Martha welcomed countless Emmaus students into their home, and Dan’s faithful example as husband, father, grandfather, elder, teacher, and counselor inspired many to follow him as he followed Christ.
Dr. Smith served in a variety of administrative roles at Emmaus including business manager, student dean, dean of education, director of the correspondence school, and executive vice president. In 1976 Dan was inaugurated as the college’s fourth president, a role he held until the year 2000. He then transitioned to the role of chancellor, where he continued to serve the college until his passing.
Under Dr. Smith’s strategic leadership, Emmaus Bible School moved from Oak Park, Illinois, to its current facility in Dubuque, Iowa, and became Emmaus Bible College, an accredited, degree- granting institution of higher learning. Dan also shepherded the college’s expansion of facilities and programs with the addition of the Pollard Fieldhouse and Emmaus’ first professional programs.
Dr. Daniel H. Smith has been a pillar of the Emmaus community for more than 60 years. Generations of alumni know him as “Mr. Emmaus.” Those who have had the privilege to serve with Dan recognize him as a man of deep faith and wisdom, a true servant of God. The Emmaus Bible College community is thankful to God for the life and work of Dr. Daniel H. Smith and rejoice in knowing that he is now in the presence of the Savior he loved and served with his life. Please remember Dan’s family members, colleagues, students, and former students as they mourn his loss.
“Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.” Jude 24-25
