Financial Aid Information

Financial Aid Information

The responsibility for paying for your education rests with you and your family. This can be accomplished by saving for education, being awarded financial aid and participating in paid student employment opportunities. Finally, but certainly not last or least, we pray that you will trust the Lord to provide for your educational expenses.

It is the desire of the Financial Aid Office that students do not leave Emmaus Bible College with an indebtedness that prevents them from fulfilling the call of God to a ministry that may not provide a large salary.

Our Financial Aid Program

Emmaus Bible College is able to offer a variety of financial aid through Federal Student Aid programs, Institutional Aid programs, and private sources.

Currently, Emmaus participates in three federally funded financial aid programs: Federal Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants, and Federal Stafford Loans. These programs are designed to provide financial assistance to students with financial need based on their resources. All applicants must be U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens, high school graduates (or equivalent), making satisfactory academic progress, and not be in default on any loan or owe a refund on any grant made under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965. To apply for these, the student must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is available at your local library or high school or through the Financial Aid Office at Emmaus.

In an effort to further assist students, Emmaus has a limited supply of grants, scholarships, and awards that may be available to eligible full-time students. Requirements and applications vary depending upon individual scholarship.

Emmaus is also approved by the Iowa Department of Public Instruction for benefits under Title 38, Chapter 36 U.S. Code. Students enrolling at Emmaus who are eligible to take advantage of these veteran's educational benefits should consult with the Registrar to obtain the necessary forms.

Students are also encouraged to seek information on private financial aid that may be available from local, state, or national service clubs or organizations. This information can be found in a number of places including your local library.

Emmaus Bible College believes that the primary responsibility for educational costs rests with the student and parents. The financial aid program at Emmaus is designed to enable students to attend Emmaus by helping to complement their families' resources. Your financial aid package, based on the information provided by the family on the FAFSA, will be developed based on your eligibility and the funds available to award.

Who is Eligible

Generally, financial aid packages are determined on the basis of need. The standardized need analysis that Emmaus uses is the FAFSA which is produced by the U.S. Department of Education. Emmaus calculates need in accordance with the Department of Education guidelines using the following formula:

Cost of Education (Includes fees, books, travel) - Family Contribution (Determined by the Department of Education) = Financial Need (Synonymous with a student's eligibility)

Once a student's need has been determined, a financial aid package will be assembled taking into account the student's preferences. Typically, students will receive notification of their financial assistance by means of an award letter.

Emmaus Scholarships and Criteria

All Emmaus Bible College Scholarship funds are available through the kindness and generosity of donors.  Funding levels can thus vary.  Some scholarships may not have sufficient funds to award any given year.  These scholarships are only available to assist students attending Emmaus Bible College.

Most Emmaus scholarships are competitive.  A Financial Aid Committee reviews applications and awards funds based on the scholarship criteria and the merits of the applicant.

You do not have to wait to be admitted to Emmaus in order to apply for scholarships.  You can apply for any Emmaus scholarships you are eligible to apply for while you are in the process of obtaining admission to the college.

Financial Aid Refund Policy

When a student is dismissed or withdraws from Emmaus Bible College during a semester, he or she may be entitled to a refund of charges. If the student has received any federal student aid during that semester all or a portion of that refund must be returned to the federal student aid programs. Students who receive no federal student aid are subject to the school's refund policy as described in the catalog.

Students who receive federal student aid and who withdraw on or before the 60% point of the enrollment period (i.e. the semester) are subject to the statutory pro-rata refund formula. The statutory pro-rata rules require the school to refund institutional charges (tuition, fees, room, board, etc.) proportional to the portion of the enrollment period that remains, rounded down to the nearest 10%.

Federal Refund Formula

Institutional Charges x % of time computed = refund amount to be distributed

Regardless of the policy used, the refund that results must be distributed in the following order as applicable:

1. Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan

2. Subsidized Federal Stafford Loan

3. Federal PLUS Loan

4. Federal Pell Grant

5. FSEOG

6. Other federal, state, private, or institutional aid

7. The student

Some Student Aid Reports are selected for verification. This is simply a process where information contained on the Student Aid Report, as reported by the student, is checked for accuracy. If your Student Aid Report is selected, we will notify you of the procedures to follow and a complete Verification Policy will be sent to you. The verification policy is available upon request from the Financial Aid Office.

If you and your family have unusual circumstances, such as tuition expenses at an elementary or secondary school, unusual medical or dental expenses not covered by insurance, a family member who recently became unemployed, or changes in income or assets that may affect your eligibility for financial aid, please contact the Financial Aid Office for more information.
