ACCA National Basketball Tournament Recap
(click a score for game statistics)
The Emmaus basketball season concluded yesterday at the ACCA National Tournament in Joplin, Missouri.
The Emmaus men came in as the #10 seed and drew a tough first round matchup on Wednesday in the athletic #7 seed, Shepherd Technical College (Memphis, TN). They fought hard but weren't able to keep pace and fell by a score of 95-55. Leading scorers were sophomore Nate Smith (11 points), junior Aaron Fullan (10 points, pictured
left), and freshman Alex Campbell (9 points on perfect 3-3 shooting). The loss put the Eagles in the consolation bracket, where they met Champion Baptist College (Hot Springs, AR), the 2011 ACCA Men's Division 2 champs. Emmaus played well from start to finish and won comfortably, 71-53. Leading the way were Nate Smith (20 points, 13 rebounds), senior Luke Wilkerson (13 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists), and Aaron Fullan (10 points, 10 rebounds). That brought the Eagles to Friday, where they took on a familiar foe, Calvary Bible College (Kansas City, MO). Calvary came out strong to take an early lead, but the Emmaus men fought back hard and led at the half, 30-21. Thanks to the Emmaus bench outscoring Calvary's bench 14-0, the Eagles held on in the end for a 60-55 victory, securing the consolation championship. Freshman Isaiah Langlois knocked down two key three-pointers down the stretch and Luke Wilkerson led the team admirably in his last college game (12 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists). Aaron Fullan had a great all-around game with 15 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 blocks.
The Emmaus women were seeded #8 and also faced a tough team in the first round, the #1 seeded Rhema Bible Training Center (Broken Arrow, OK). Rhema's athleticism proved too much to overcome, and despite a strong effort, the Lady Eagles fell by a score of 87-47. Junior Molly Barsness (pictured
right) led the team with 13 points on 6-6 shooting from the field. In the consolation round, Emmaus took on a fellow member of the NCCAA Midwest Region, Grace Bible College (Grand Rapids, MI). After losing to Grace by 33 points back in late January, the Lady Eagles showed great improvement and hung within 10 points most of the way before falling by the score of 77-61. Grace's Jessica Sikorski, a candidate for NCCAA National Player of the Year, was too much to handle, scoring 41 points and dominating the middle. Four members of the Emmaus team scored in double figures: senior Anna Nininger (15 points), sophomore Raquel Gutierrez (11 points), Molly Barsness (10 points), and senior Brianna Doran (10 points). On Saturday, playing for 7th place, Emmaus drew another familiar opponent, Association Free Lutheran Bible School (Plymouth, MN). The Lady Eagles trailed by only four at halftime, but could never get closer than that in the second half and lost by the final of 59-47. Anna Nininger led the effort, scoring 12 points and dishing out 6 assists in her final college game. Molly Barsness (12 points), Raquel Gutierrez (10 points), and senior Ashleigh Wilson (8 points) were some of the other major contributors to the cause.
All in all, the trip to Nationals was a great success, as both teams had a great time playing and watching basketball, relaxing in the hotel, traveling and eating together, and getting to fellowship with brothers and sisters in Christ from the other Christian colleges from around the country.

Friday Night Emmaus Basketball Wrapup
The Eagles earned a well-deserved win tonight after losing several heartbreakers over the past few weeks.
Junior Mat Grimm (pictured left) scored 9 of the first 11 Emmaus points to set the tone in favor of the Eagles, and it was a well-rounded team effort the rest of the way, as they took down Association Free Lutheran Bible School (Plymouth, MN) by the final score of 70-60. Sophomore Nate Smith (pictured right)
scored 17 points and dished out 5 assists, while junior Aaron Fullan tallied 12 points and 7 rebounds. Senior Luke Wilkerson finished with 6 assists, and freshman Isaiah Langlois tossed in 14 points. Matt Grimm finished with 13 points and junior Matt Lee chipped in 7 of his own. Keys to the game were hot 3-point shooting (9-18) and unselfish passing (17 team assists). The win helped to avenge the 8-point loss Emmaus suffered to AFLBS up in Minnesota on January 8th. Leading the charge the Conquerors was Alex Benson with 24 points.
In the women's game, the Lady Eagles fought hard but came up a bit short in the end, losing by the final of 52-43. Trailing in the first half by as many as 10, Emmaus came roaring back to cut the deficit to 4 at halftime. The Lady Eagles gave a valiant effort but quite made it all the way back, due to some cold shooting spells. Many girls made significant contributions for the Lady Eagles, headlined by senior Ashleigh Wilson (pictured left) who finished with 8 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Senior Anna Nininger (8 points, 10 rebounds), and junior Heather Grimm (7 points, 5 rebounds) had solid games as well. Shelby Kinneberg paced the AFLBS team with 15 points.
Both teams are back in action this coming Friday night (January 28) and will take on Calvary Bible College (Kansas City, MO) as part of the Emmaus Classic. See the schedule webpages for more details.

Lady Eagles Win Thriller at Tip-Off Tournament!
The Emmaus women's basketball team defeated Northland International University 53-50 on Saturday as part of NCCAA Midwest Regional Tip-Off Tournament at Moody Bible Institute. The game was close throughout as the Lady Eagles took a 24-21 lead into halftime,
and were able to hold that same three-point lead at the final buzzer due to some clutch free throw shooting and great team play. Leading the way for Emmaus were seniors Anna Nininger (pictured left) with 24 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists, and Brianna Doran (pictured right) with 12 points and 13 rebounds. The Lady Eagles shot 78% from the charity stripe and committed a season low of 12 turnovers.
"This was a nice win for us," said Coach Smith. "Northland is always tough to beat and we rose to the occasion today with some great leadership from our seniors Anna, Bri and Ashleigh."

"It is good for us to play against tough teams that will really push us to up our level of play," said Coach Pitman.

The Lady Eagles defeated Central Christian College of the Bible (Moberly, MO) 61-52 on Friday night, and took down Lincoln Christian University (Lincoln, IL) 52-38 on Saturday afternoon. The men's team also outgunned CCCB by the score of 85-67, but fell in a hard-fought game against Lincoln, the 9th-ranked team in NCCAA Division II, 82-71.
Friday, 2/12 (Women's Boxscore) (Men's Boxscore)
Friday's women's action began with both teams playing even for most of the first half, but the Lady Eagles pulled came out on top thanks in large part to freshman Tiffiney Starr's 25 points and 8 rebounds. Forcing 32 CCCB turnovers and holding Lady Saints to 35% shooting were the defensive keys. Junior Anna Nininger contributed 12 points and 6 steals to the solid team effort. Marissa Hunter led CCCB with 20 points and 5 steals.
In the nightcap, freshman Tim Westrum came out hot and drained six three-pointers in a first half that saw the Eagles take a convincing 54-28 lead at the break. CCCB mounted a comeback in the second behind Reggie Evans' 23 points, but Emmaus never let the game back within double digits. Smart passing was the key to the Eagles victory, scoring a season-high in points and dishing out 33 assists as a team. Junior Rex Nelson chipped in 17 points and 5 rebounds, while senior Kyle Graw (10 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists), junior Luke Wilkerson (9 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists), and senior Daniel Rinehart (9 points, 6 assists) also made important contributions to the victory.
Saturday, 2/13 (Women's Boxscore) (Men's Boxscore)
On Saturday Emmaus again moved the ball around well, accumulating 19 total assists, led by 4 from junior Brianna Doran. The bulk of the scoring was done by freshman Tiffiney Starr (21 points, 10 rebounds) and junior Anna Nininger (9 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals). Sophomore Molly Barsness pulled down 8 rebounds and had 5 steals. The Lady Red Lions' effort was led by Sheena Cooper's 20 points and 15 rebounds. Today's win moved the Lady Eagles into #6 seed in the NCCAA Midwest Regional, coming up on February 25th at Kuyper College in Grand Rapids, MI.
In the men's game, the Eagles gave Lincoln a strong test, but in the end the Red Lions' toughness and experience brought them the victory. Freshman Tim Westrum paced the scoring again with 22 points and also contributed 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Other Eagles in double-figures were junior Rex Nelson (13 points) and freshman Nate Smith (11 points). Junior Luke Wilkerson had a solid all-around game with 8 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists.

Lady Eagles Defeat Grace Bible College!
Just a few hours after the men's team defeated Great Lakes, the women took the floor hoping to do the same against Grace Bible College (Grand Rapids, MI). The underdog Lady Eagles came out strong and jumped to an 18-6 advantage, maintaining control throughout the first half and leading the Lady Tigers at the break by a score of 38-24. Grace mounted a second half comeback and got as close as 40-35, but Emmaus responded to every challenge and pulled away to win by a final of 71-60. Grace's Jessica
Sikorski was nearly unstoppable (28 points, 19 rebounds), but the Lady Eagles forced 30 turnovers and worked together beautifully throughout the game, with 20 assists on their 28 field goals. Sophomore Molly Barsness (pictured) led the charge with 21 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals. Junior Anna Nininger had a solid game (16 points, 5 assists, 4 steals), and freshman Tiffiney Star contributed 14 points on 6 of 9 shooting. Sophomore Alyssa Pfeifer (8 points, 5 assists) and junior Brianna Doran (6 points, 4 steals) were among the many other Lady Eagles who made contributions to the victory. It was the first time since 2001 that the Lady Eagles have defeated an opponent in the tough NCCAA Midwest Region.
Coach Justin Smith comments: "This was probably the most meaningful win in the five years I have coached at Emmaus. Grace is always one of the most talented and well-coached teams we face, and our girls have worked hard all season for something like this. Most importantly, I trust that all of our attitudes have glorified Christ on the court today."

Eagles Pull Out Exciting Victory!
The Emmaus Eagles basketball team got a well-deserved win tonight against a talented team from Great Lakes Christian College (Lansing, MI). After losing a close game to the Crusaders at the Regional Tip-Off Tournament in December, Emmaus was ready for the challenge on their home floor. The game was close all the way, with the Eagles taking a two-point lead on a tough running 10-foot shot by senior Kyle Graw (10 points, 3 assists) at the halftime buzzer. Great Lakes came out strong in the second half and led by as many as 5 points, but back-to-back baskets by freshman Tim Westrum (22 points, 7 rebounds) brought the Eagles back in front 74-72. Great Lakes responded by taking the lead back 76-74, but junior Luke Wilkerson (10 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists) made a steal and tied the game at 76. Junior Daniel Rinehart (9 points, 6 steals) then forced a turnover and drew a foul, calmly sinking both ends of a one-and-one to give Emmaus a two-point lead. After forcing a Great Lakes missed three-pointer, sophomore Nate Cravillion (5 points, 7 rebounds) grabbed the board and then made two free throws to put the game out of reach. Great Lakes converted a layup at the buzzer to make the final score 80-78. Junior Rex Nelson added 9 points for the Eagles and sophomore Matt Lee contributed 8 points and 2 steals. The Crusaders had four players in double figures, led by Mark Davis (19 points) and Marcus Anthony (17 points).

Emmaus ended the season with an official record of 4-7.

The opening game for Emmaus in the ACCA National Men's Soccer Tournament was characterized by excellent play and some major disappointments. Emmaus Soccer Team Still Undefeated!
On Friday, October 9, the Emmaus men's soccer team traveled to Grand Rapids to play Grace Bible College. Emmaus struck first with a goal by sophomore Mitch Nelson. Grace notched one of their own and the score stood at 1-1 at the half.
The Eagles came out strong in the second with three unanswered goals. Junior Andrew Paleczny scored all three to record a hat trick. Emmaus played strong defensively and Grace could not find the back of the net during the second half, and the Eagles won by a score of 4-1.
Emmaus traveled a bit further east on Saturday to play against Great Lakes Christian College in Lansing. Junior Eric Seeman found the back of the net before the time clock had advanced one minute. Great Lakes put the equalizer in shortly thereafter. Similar to Friday's game, the score at halftime stood at 1-1.
Following the similar pattern of Friday's match, the Eagles this time scored two unanswered goals, the first by Eric Seeman, the second by junior Rex Nelson, to establish the lead. Again, Emmaus showed a strong defensive effort and Great Lakes was not able to put any more points on the board. The game ended with Emmaus prevailing by a score of 3-1.
Of note, Rex and Mitch Nelson's parents surprised them by attending both games, and they were each able to notch a goal in front of their parents. Freshman Matt Imhof's parents also attended both games and Matt was able to deliver two assists during Saturday's game.

Lady Eagles Volleyball
The Lady Eagles finished their regular season schedule on Tuesday in Ankeny, IA against two tough teams. Nebraska stepped up their game in the last two sets to take the victory 20-25, 25-21, 11-25, 14-25. "We played really well in this match, but once Nebraska's quick offense got rolling we never recovered," said Coach Pitman. "I was really pleased with our play and effort overall."
The second match vs. the home team Faith Baptist was a different story, as the Lady Eagles fell in straight sets 19-25, 11-25, 13-25. "Fatigue set in and it was a tough gym atmosphere for us to play in," commented Coach Pitman. "Faith is a very strong and consistent team and they were just too much for us tonight."

A Great Victory for Emmaus Eagles Soccer!
On Friday, October 2, the Emmaus men's soccer team traveled to Ankeny, IA to play Faith Baptist Bible College. It was a highly anticipated game as Faith has a very strong program and has been ranked in the Top 10 of the NCCAA Division II.
Faith capitalized on some early Emmaus mistakes and scored two unanswered goals in the first half. Emmaus responded strong as junior Rex Nelson scored a goal off a pass from sophomore Ben Wakefield midway through the second half. Rex scored again on an assist from his brother, sophomore Mitch Nelson, to even the score at 2-2. Junior Andrew Paleczny put Emmaus ahead with an unassisted goal with about 13 minutes remaining in the game. The final 13 minutes were marked by Faith mounting a flurry of offensive attacks. Thanks to the great fan support from students, friends and families who braved the miserable weather conditions, the Eagles were able to hold on to the 3-2 lead and claim a well fought victory, preserving their undefeated record at 8-0.
